Ridgeland, SC Weather |
Incumbent Sheriff Greg Jenkins is excited to be running for the sheriff's office again. Running as a Democrat, Jenkins is pleased with the job that he's done during the last four years.
A veteran of the department - the only one he's worked for in more than a 25-year-career - Jenkins has a lot of interest in staying in office. He and his family live in the county and are active in the community. He's worked under two sheriffs and loves what he does for the community.
He sees the county as his family. And while he's seen a lot of things over the years, the most important things to him are not necessarily the biggest changes.
"The first thing I want to do is thank the citizens of Jasper County for electing me as their sheriff in 2008," Jenkins said. "They didn't just give me a job, they gave me a home, the responsibility of watching over our homes, our families. For that I'm very grateful."
Jenkins said since the election, he and his staff have been working daily to bring positive change to the department and to the county. He feels that because the community has given him that trust, and that responsibility, he has an obligation to return it with safety for them and a sense of trust in the department itself.
While he was reluctant to go into too many details about his future plans for the department, he says that he's brought together resources to make changes during the last four years and is working on funding and resources for the future.
"They're not just limited to the sheriff's office," he said.
The recent spotlight on the department brought about by candidate Charles Mitchell has raised questions that have been answered - decisively. Jenkins has no qualms about the programs that have been instituted within the department or the changes that have been made.
"We do weekly safety tips, through the (Jasper County) Sun," Jenkins said. "We do talks with the community, through the churches and the schools, and that's all important. The job that the citizens gave me, when they hired me for this job, it's not one person making a difference, it's an entire department."
Jenkins compliments his staff, saying that it's all of them that make the difference within the department, understanding the vision of the needs of the people. He says that if your vision is not conducive to the needs of the people, it won't work. It has to comply with a need.
He would like to see some changes made for the benefit of the officers and the community, but says that it has to be related to the needs of the county as a whole. He is reluctant to elaborate on it at this point, other than saying that talking to both the residents of Jasper County and the officers in the sheriff's office is important - and has been an ongoing process.
Jenkins understands that the sheriff's office is a 24-hour agency, and knows that his officers are working hard to reach everyone.
"Both sides want to be heard," Jenkins said. "We have some great plans, and we've accomplished some great things. I'm very happy with that, and with the resources they've been accomplished with. They've allowed us to do things like the School Resource Officers, and they've made a huge difference in our schools.
"I can't just pull one thing that I'm proudest of, because there are actually two. The first is reaching out to our seniors. Going out to the churches, going out to the senior centers about things that concern them, especially with the scams that are going on not only here, but in surrounding counties. It's making a difference in their lives, and that's important to all of us."
Jenkins is glad to have the cooperation of the surrounding counties in programs like this, being able to reach out whenever something happens, like the recent letter scam, and connecting with our elder citizens to let them know what is happening and how to stop it.
"The second one is the officers in our schools, which is through a grant. The School Resource Officers, a C.O.P.S. grant that many agencies are able to take advantage of. This allows us to place officers in the schools.
"It's made a huge difference. It's a prevention program. It's been awesome for our kids," he said.
Jenkins also notes that it makes it easier for the community's youths to not only be more comfortable going to an officer if trouble occurs, but it also makes it easier for those same youngsters to make different choices in their lives, knowing that officers are there to help if they need it.
"It's a relationship. It's not just a job," he said. "People know that they can come and talk to you, and that you're not just there for a limited amount of time. They know you live in the area, that your family is here, and that you're available. It makes a huge difference. That's one of the ways of solving crime - being able to work together is the key."
"You always have that chalkboard, looking at changes, getting information from other areas and adding it to what you already know," Jenkins said. "The biggest thing that I enjoy is the change that you can bring. I want this to be the last place that our residents come - when they come to us, it's usually because there's a problem that everyone has to solve.
"We want the same things in 2012. It's personal - but it concerns the entire community and my staff. I just want to continue to serve Jasper County, and continue to be there for our residents," he said. "I'm committed because the citizens have committed themselves to me. Your heart has to be in what you want to do. I'm in this, heart and soul. The word is commitment, for me. I've always cherished my time here, and hope to continue that."

Programs and changes?
While I do not dispute that Sheriff Jenkins has instituted the programs and changes that he is so proud of, I question how they have made our community safer. Just as the Sheriff said, we have given him the "responsibility of watching over our homes." How does a safety tip in the newspaper and talks in the community provide us with effective law enforcement protection? Those are things that a politician does, not a law enforcement officer.
Let's look at the two programs that the Sheriff is proudest of, putting more officers in our schools and reaching out to the seniors in the community. While they are both wonderful things, they are not the responsibility of the sheriff's office. The responsibility of taking care of our kids belongs to the School. If that is where the Sheriff's heart is, then I propose that he go and get a job there. Jasper County also has a county organization that serves our seniors. If the sheriff wants to work with senior adults, he should do it on his own time. I am not opposed to serving our children or our senior adults; I just think that it is not what the Sheriff's Office is there for. WE NEED A SHERIFF WHO WILL PROTECT US FROM VIOLENT CRIMINALS AND REDUCE CRIME IN JASPER COUNTY!
Re-election
I do agree with JCLawDog, the things that the Sheriff is so proud of doesn't protect the citizens of this county. We need a Sheriff that will protect us with his knowledge, training and ability and wants to work with his men in the field, to protect us. The Deputies need to be trained also in newest ways of policing, if not they can't do their jobs to best of their ability. We need a man like Sam Woodward, he has all the above and more so if you want to reduce crime in this county and make a difference vote for him. If not and you want a man that will sit in his office and do nothing for our county vote for Greg Jenkins!
Best option
Greg is your best option of all of the announced candidates for sheriff. The others really don't know what they are trying to get themselves into. It is easy to criticize from the comfort of your lazy boy chair. It's another thing to actually lead a sheriff's office. None of the others have actual leadership and or administrative experiences. Greg has these experiences. Greg also has the support and the trust of Jasper County at large. Greg will easily be relected with a little hard work on his part. My advice to Greg though is he needs a new chief deputy! Reelect Greg Jenkins Sheriff!
Leadership and Management are vitally important
Levyreader, I agree that leadership and management skills are vitally important and I respect your opinion, but I must disagree on one major point. Out of all of all of the announced candidates, Sheriff Jenkins is not the only one with leadership experience. Sam Woodward has over twenty five years of service to this county in law enforcement and much of that has been at the executive level of the Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Riley. Charles Mitchell has been a successful entrepreneur and businessman, and has much investigative experience during his several years in law enforcement. Even Keefe has run a business with moderate success. What has Greg run? During his tenure at the Sheriff's Office he has been relegated to positions that have a title of leadership, but he has not been running anything. While he served as a Lieutenant, Ben Riley and Roy Hughes made all of his decisions. Prior to that, he served as a DARE officer and spent some time on patrol. He has ZERO management experience, save the time he has spent as Sheriff, and he has demonstrated his lack of ability during this time. Maybe he could do a wonderful job as the head of the school resource officers, but not as the head of the entire department.
In regards to your comment about people who "criticize from the comfort of your lazy boy chair", I take exception to this remark. I have spent a great deal of time serving the citizens of this county in Law Enforcement and have spent my entire adult life in the service of the public.
Greg is the one who is lacking in leadership and management skills, and this is evident in the manner in which he has managed and led the Jasper County Sheriff's Office during his time as Sheriff. If you want four more years of out of control crime (break-ins, shootings, robberies) then cast your vote for Greg Jenkins. If you want to see our community's safety and security improved, cast your vote for change!
These are not important
Law dog I respect your viewpoint. And I welcome a civil debate. Let’s be reminded that the sheriff’s office is a constitutionally elected office acquired by popular vote. The sheriff’s office has little to do with a sheriff being a professional administrator. Greg’s qualifications are surely in line with the sheriffs in Hampton and Beaufort Counties; none of whom are college educated law men. The voting people of Jasper County have overwhelmingly approved Greg Jenkins as their sheriff; Ben Riley before that. There is a long history here of approachable people, who the citizens know, and like, such as Greg getting elected and then being sheriff as long as they want to be. Now if this was an actual job application process for hiring the most qualified person such as when cities hire police chiefs or city administrators, then yes, Greg would probably be out of his league and be an obvious long shot. But this is the office of the sheriff. This is also Jasper County. And it is the kind of law enforcement the people of Jasper County and many surrounding counties prefer over having a detached neutral best qualified on paper administrator time and time again. And no other announced candidate is better qualified in my opinion. Given the complex political nature of the position where there is no concrete set of standards or qualifications, Greg Jenkins is the best option going into this election for sheriff. I’m just saying what I believe to be true. These announced candidates will be wasting their time and money. And I will say this again, Greg would be wise to get a new chief deputy.
THIS IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
Levyreader I agree with JC Law dog. Greg Jenkins doesn't have the qualifications of Beaufort County Sheriff P.J Tanner, that much I know!!!!!! Greg Jenkins along with Sam Woodward worked for Jasper County Sheriffs Office for 25 plus years and Jasper County Sheriffs Office is so far behind all of the local law enforcement agencies. My opinion moving here 10 years ago, Jasper County needs something new like, Charles Mitchell. I heard Mr. Mitchell speak at a community meeting in LEVY and that's the next Sheriff of Jasper County if I have anything to do with it!!!!! Oh yeah not to forget the comment about Chief Deputy Roy Hughes needs to be replaced. Remember Roy Hughes was REHIRED as Chief Deputy of The Jasper County Sheriffs Office in 2008 by "GREG". Mr. Mitchell from what I've been told and has seen for myself has the experience to deal with all of the law enforcement and the community needs, you should meet him for yourself!!!!!
LevyReader has no clue...
LevyReader you sound intelligent at face value but you obviously have very little clue. I quote your previous comments "None of the others have actual leadership and or administrative experiences." This is humorous. Where do you get your information? You have other candidates that have years of both experiences. Woodward who has managed employees and handled the administrative end of his leadership position, Mitchell who has managed employees in his personal business endeavors and who has handled administrative duties running a successful charter bus business, just to name one. The current Sheriff has has spent most of his career in the school as an SRO. He had neither leadership nor administrative experience coming into office but now your implying he magically does? Everyone knows who really runs the show at the JCSO.
Quote: "And no other announced candidate is better qualified in my opinion." LOL again! What are you talking about? Charles Mitchell and Sam Woodward have more experience in real law enforcement individually than the Sheriff does. A few years as a figure head does not make him more experienced. He has proven that he is clueless when it comes to budgets or how to implement a plan for the county in order to better serve it's citizens. You have candidates that worked undercover and went hand to hand with people wanted by the U.S. Marshalls and yet the Sheriff is better qualified you say? Are you reading his press releases solely or open to the facts that are at hand? The current Sheriff cannot hold a candle to Woodward and Mitchell, who are the only two strong candidates.
Facts presented by Charles Mitchell in Levy:
1. The Sheriff hs an overtime budget of $10,000 (look it up - it's public information) Other entities like the Jail have $175,000 in overtime money. The Sheriff has an office supply budget of around $16,000. He has written two memos that were presented in Levy asking officers to volunteer their time to work.
2. The Drug Task Force no longer exists. There were previously seven people on that task force. When there was a task force - an agreement was signed giving Beaufort County full control. Very litle time was ever spent on drugs in Jasper County. Mitchell has a copy of that agreement. No one is focused on the drug problem in Jasper at present.
These are just two examples of why the current Sheriff is the laughing stock of the county and why even his previous supporters and close friends are saying they just can't support him again.
Levyreader: If you just like the Sheriff - say so. Don't make up statements that are ridiculous and without merit. We will respect you more.
Sheriff Re-Election
Levy Reader talks about how popular Greg Jenkins is, he is clueless its by color not by qualifications. As a Lt. he did nothing but sit behind a desk and talk getting nothing accomplished, and is still doing the same thing today as Sheriff. His Chief Deputy does the dirty work and not that well either. Easy Reader is correct when he says Woodward and Mitchell are both more quailified than Greg Jenkins will ever be. Levy Reader you and the rest of this county better wake up before its to late, we need someone to stop the crime, cut down on drug abuse which leds to crime, and not just running their mouth about it. We have no drug team in this county anymore, why? Ask the Sheriff I'am sure he will tell you why, not!
Requesting a civil debate
I will be glad to continue my viewpoints guys if we can keep this important topic adult-like and civil.
Coosawhatchie Meeting Thrusday Feb. 9 - 7:00PM
I just found out there is another Charles Mitchell presentation Thursday February 9, 2012 - 7:00PM in Coosawhatchie at the community center there. It's near the Coosawhatchie Baptist Church.
If you haven't been to one of these meetings, you really should attend one - the Levy one was an eye opener for many of us.
Civil Debate
No one is not be civil, its you that doesn't want to read the truth about Greg Jenkins. He hasn't done anything for this county as far as cutting down on crime. Even the drug dealers want him to stay in office so they can stay in business. What does that tell you? You and your friends need to wake up,we need change and the only way to do it is to vote out the ones that aren't doing their jobs.
Sheriff Department-Nothing will change
DON WOODS
I enjoy reading the comments from other readers. The simple truth is that nothing is going to change. The Sheriff will be re-elected. Since I can remember, the Sheriff's office has been terrible. Not just this administration but the ones before him. What people do is vote for the person that their church tells them to vote for. That is a fact. Has always been that way-always will be. If you want the truth, take the time to look at the facts concerning crime and Jasper County. Of all the counties in the state,it ranks in the top four for most crime for its size and least amount of solved crimes for its size. Now when you have the most crimes and least crimes solved-what does that mean? It means that per population, you have a better chance of being murdered, assaulted, raped or theft in Jasper County than almost any county in the state. Who cares? Do you think the reverends care? Of course not-they never have. If you want to be protected from violent crime in Jasper County-get yourself a sawed off double barrel shotgun with buckshot and keep it where you can get to it easily or you can just wait and call 911-the sheriff will be right there. Just kidding. Raise your voice, write letters but when the election is over-you got the same thing.
No Go...
Sheriff Jenkins, allow me to inform you on why I will not be voting for you in this upcoming election. I have been a resident here in Jasper County for 7 years. I moved here from Syracuse, NY. Sir, with all due respect, I have came into the Sheriffs Office several times to make complaints on items being stolen from my yard. When I would get there I would always have to wait for an hour just to make a formal complaint when there is deputies just passing through the hallways. Another reason is simply because of the drugs. I am tired of seeing drug dealers walking through my yard just to make sales. EVERY citizen of Jasper county do not feel safe anymore! I refuse to send my kids to Ridgeland Elementary, or Ridgeland High because of the gang activities and the bullying that is constantly growing not only with the students, but with the SROs and the teachers. You replace a fairly decent SRO with a new SRO, that does not have a sufficient communication with any of the students. They are rude, and they walk around the schools all day just conversating. My next complaint is simply the lack of deputies. Why is there only 2 deputies working? EVERYONE in the county knows this, and thats why YOUR sheriffs office lack respect from anyone! But tell you what im just preaching to the choir, the polls will definetely show you how the people of this county have felt for the past for years!
