Vashti Washington asks for patience.
The Jasper County School District superintendent understands there's great interest in the possible consolidation of the public middle and high schools, but a decision will not be rushed.
At last week's school board meeting in Hardeeville, community member Ransom Dunham said parents are confused about possible consolidation.
Washington hopes to correct that confusion.
"It's a process," Washington said.
The process has been public since last September when the district hosted a public meeting in Ridgeland and bonding attorney Brent Jeffcoat made it clear that the Sept. 2001 referendum authorized the school board to build two school facilities, but "has no obligation to maintain a particular school facility."
The meeting showed a clear disparity in the courses offered at the schools and cost to operate Ridgeland and Hardeeville's campuses. According to the district, based on teacher's salaries, the cost per student at Hardeeville High is $6,188 compared to $3,760 at Ridgeland High. Neither campus has been built as a comprehensive high school. Ridgeland does not have outdoor athletic facilities and Hardeeville is lacking classrooms.
The district hosted a public meeting in Hardeeville last October and recently it sought participation from the public in forming focus groups to address consolidation. Washington noted the district sent letters to churches, call alerts were made and the information was published in the Jasper County Sun. Thirty people are part of the groups.
Board member Barbara Clark thinks the school board should be invited to the focus group meetings, but Washington doesn't think that's a good idea.
"If a board member would participate it would appear they are influencing parents and community members," said Washington, who hopes the groups "allow the community a free will to speak."
Clark said the public has not been allowed enough of a voice. There were no public comments at the September meeting and at the October meeting the public was given two minutes to speak.
"We know it is a process, but I don't think you have heard from the public enough," Clark said late last week.
Clark would like to speak with Dr. David Longshore and David Rawlinson. Longshore is a former superintendent in Holly Hill who has worked in merging three high schools and Rawlinson is the director of the Office of Special Projects at the state Department of Education. They are independent consultants and have attended the prior public meetings.
Rawlinson and Longshore will make recommendations to the board after looking at curriculum and course offerings; scheduling; transportation, including the length of bus rides and students who drive or walk to school; the amount of unused classrooms; athletic programs and other extra-curricular activities; and staffing, including class sizes and student-to-teacher ratios.
They said they'd be willing to speak individually with the public.
Longshore and Rawlinson are expected to give Washington a complete report by March 15.
"I think when you start a Step 1, you want to be informed about Step 2 and Step 3," Clark said.
Clark said she's opposed to consolidation because of the county's size.
"It's unfair to travel," she said. "When your child gets sick they (school district) call you. How do they know I have gas money to pick my child up? How can I get my child to different functions? I feel as if something else can be put into place."
Looking to 2013-14
Possible consolidation will not happen until the 2013-14 school year, but Washington said ideally the board would decide by June 30, 2012. A $3 million School Improvement Grant ends June 30, 2013.
Lack of state funding has hurt the district. According to the district, in 2000, the state's base-student-cost funding was about $2,200 per student; this school year it is an estimated $1,765.
"I'm trying to keep (the public) informed," Washington said. "I know it's an emotional issue for some of the public...I am here for the best interests of all students in Jasper County."

Not a process but a "scam"
When will the Jasper County School Board of Education Member realize that they do not take orders from the Supertindent? Do they not realize that they hired the Supertindent and she does not have the authority to tell them what to the do. It seems to me that the Supertindent realize that she can tell them what to do and they obey it. It was made known at the meeting in October at the Hardeeville Campus by Board Member Barbara Clark that the JCSD Board Members could attend the meeting but could not speak. There were some validate questions asked but they were tabled to be answered at a later date. Mr Longshore and Rawlinson were placed on the hot seat that night and it was unfair to them. I just thought that they were used as a front to get the message out to the public and but not allow the public to get answers.
BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THE CITIZENS OF JASPER COUNTY NEED TO ELECT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS THAT ARE GOING TO REALIZE THAT THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS DO NOT TAKE ORDERS FROM THE SUPERTINDENT. THIS IS AN ELECTION YEAR AND WE NEED TO START MAKING ADJUSTMENTS!!!!!!!
We can operate both of the campus in the county provided we get rid of some of the District director's positions. One of my big question is when we supposedly "consolidate" the schools will we eliminate that $60,000 county athletic director job or will the county be hoodwinked by giving him another job title. The school district needs to take a realistic look at the which direction the county parents are moving. There has been a lot of talk of parents enrolling there students in the private school, Abundant Life as well as Thomas Heyward could really see an enrollment jump. Hardeeville now has a new charter school that will begin in August 2012, how will this affect the JSCD student enrollment? The cost per student seems a little odd, is there a way that we can see the offical report with the numbers?
The article said lack of fund can hurt the district..........too many high level director and ecevutive positions at the cost of $1.7 mil plus is what is hurting the county.
INCOMPETENTS AT ITS BEST
We are being scammed. We allowd the school board to bring a bunch of crooks in here.
They are robbing us blind. They need to go.
Additionally, we have principals at our schools who seem to be not prepared for their positions.
They are unprofessional. I was told by a student that they saw the principal at Hardeeville Middle High school slam the door open from the library.
He was cussing as he walked down the hallway. If this happened, he should be ashamed of himself.
How dare you act that way. As the leader of the school, you are suppose to set a positive example for the students.
I later found out that the principal left the library after a meeting with his teachers. He screamed and cussed at them, I am told over something that they have no control over. How in the world could he do something like this. He is suppose to be the leader of the school and he is mistreating the staff like that.
No wonder, why our schools are so messed up. We continue to bring crazy people into our schools.
We need to do everything to get rid of that principal. He is a poor example. We need somebody who is respectful and helpful. Get rid of him.
As a retiree from the military, I am able to recognize gross incompetence. In my many years in this county, I believe that this educational system is the worst it has been under the leadership of Dr. Washington.
She needs to do something. All over the district, the teachers are being harassed and intimidated and the students are being neglected. The district leaders should be ashamed of themselves. Please do the right thing.
Stop the madness, especially that principal over that at Hardeeville Middle High School. You are putting the students and the staff at risk with your erratic and violent behavior.
Incompetence
The incompetence continues. Until the head is chopped off, there is nothing anyone can do! The Superintendent needs to go! She is the one who commands the principals. And as it stands now, she commands the board as well. The children are following their mother. Vashti Washington. The ones under the leaders are all scared. Sad, sad, sad... She continues to lead by intimidation and the school leaders and staff does the very same thing with her blessings. They all need to get on their knees and pray! State officials should be notified of how the teachers, and other employees are being treated. The Board will not do anything about Washington's actions.
The School District wanted change
Little did the school district know that the change wanted for our schools would be done like a Syrian Dictator!!!! I blame the school board for letting smooth speech trick them into hiring such a person as Washington. She does not like the sight of her own race around her. She is black and but thinks shes is better because she is in control. She hires people who are hateful, insensitive, has a personality like the one she walks around with. The Sryrian Dictator has killed and is continuing to murder all that oppose him!!! Washington is running the school district like a dictator. She doesn't take the time to understand the culture or people not like her. Change does not have to be done in Jasper County Schools in this manner. She is murdering the spirit of Jasper County because she has decided everyone but her are nothing, know nothing, and stupid.
Now about school consolidation. Washington is just pacifying the parents with group forums for input!! Parents all things will be done her way in the end. She just playing the political game with all of you parents; wakeup people! She was hired to get it done no matter who doesn't like it. WONDER HOW SHE SLEEPS AT NIGHT? Would you say she has no soul? or Conscious?
A dictator in the school district
I agree with your thoughts. She hires people who are hateful, insensitive, has a personality like the one she walks around with.
I believe that Washington has no soul and no conscious.
We have been made fools by allowing that woman to come here and destroy us. Vashti Washington should resign.
School board members you need to do the right thing and get rid of her now. If she stays in the district and continue to intimidate and beat up on the teachers, lawsuits will bankrupt this county.
Look at what is going on at Hardeeville Middle High school. It is a mess to have a principal over there who cusses in front of the students. He should be ashamed of himself.
No wonder the morale of teachers are so low. He expects the teachers to be respectful but he is not when he behaves like that. I am told that he is not approachable and he has a nasty disposition.
As I walk through school sometimes, I see a bad spirit in that school. I am looking forward to that charter school opening so that I can send my grand child there. I hope it is much better than what we been getting.
