TEST SCORES REFLECT JASPER COUNTY
Is anybody really surprised by the recent test scores? Really? I remember about 40 years ago,I was a substitute teacher at West Hardeeville. I quit because the principal told me I had to pass students. When I asked why,he simply said,if we fail all those that deserve to fail,we will wind up with 500 people in the 9th grade. I quit.
Who should be blame? Why,lets blame everybody so that nobody has to take responsibility. Parents. They can't help their kids because they have an equal of less education than their kids. That would be like dumb leading dumber. Teachers. How can they be doing their job and the test results are so bad? Administration. Oh,what can they do. They don't get paid enough, the parents will not help, the school board will not cooperate. School Board. They of all people should act surprised. The only bad thing about them all resigning at once is that you probably would not have anybody take their place. Students. Yes,lets blame them. They just just be dumb. Have been for decades and it just gets worse and worse.
I thought that people like Reverend Gregory said that when we got new schools, kids would be smart. As most people knew then, and now,a building does nothing. As a matter of fact,it has got worse.
Who cares, the teachers, administrators and all the other personnel get their checks and benefits-so who cares. The school board members get their checks, benefits and perks-so who cares.
I was lambasted in the paper a year ago because I said that our young people were suffering from education abortion. That means that once born in Jasper County and sent to a public school-their life is ruined. They will never have the chance to be all they can be. They will always have to settle for less. The adults are stealing their future. That is sad. Think about it. Imagine a child being born today in Jasper. Just look at the child and say,I will send you to public school but you will have no future. You are doomed.
Well, time for another workshop. Maybe a getaway to Hilton Head to discuss the problem. Bring in another superintendent with a five or ten year plan. That should be enough time for most people in office or working to retire and get the heck out of there. Meantime, the kids are dumber than ever. What does that say about the adults in charge of their education? Not much.
What is the answer? Oh,its not hard. It can't be hard when we have private schools in Jasper turning out well rounded, educated kids with a future. You have to have somebody take charge, make the hard decisions, enforce the hard decisions,be on site (not in a board room) and demand, let me say that again, demand results and accountability. I don't care about the adults. They had their chance. I care about the kids and their future and they should not be banished to educational abortion.
Take care and God Bless .

jasper high schools test scores
why are you surprised? When principals tell teachers that they cannot fail students who have failed this is what you get. You hire people who have never BEEN IN sc BEFORE, never been a principal before, now you expect them to be better than the people who were there before? right. What is the board going to do about it?
DonRock852.......
Few things I want to comment about your post, which has some valid points.......

That's one of the biggest porblems we have here in the county now. Teachers and staff are limited to what they can and can't do with students. To meet a number, the district allows for students to move along the grade ranks, although they are not ready to move ahead. But it's not just the district, the community as a whole doesn't do what's neccesary to see these students succeed.......
This is where I begin to disagree with you. On some parts at least. Parents who show no interest in their kids' lives will have kids who reflect that in the schools. Teachers, again, there's some limits to what they can and can't do unfortunately to help the kids. What the district thinks is best, which has shown that it's not working, is what gets done at schools. Administration, most know what they're getting into when the come to Jasper, adn instead of bringing a solution, either flux to the "higher powers" or just join the one of many. School Board. Something's gotta give, how long have they tried to change things and it just doesn't happen? Students.......they are what they are bred to be. When there's no interest in school at home, they will have no interest from their part. When they know that they can do the minimum and still pass, then they get in a trend. So yes, everyone shares part of the blame for the state of Jasper County's education. Of course, there are exceptions, as there is to everything, but a few can't fix the mass.
I thought that people like Reverend Gregory said that when we got new schools, kids would be smart. As most people knew then, and now,a building does nothing. As a matter of fact,it has got worse.
Correct. Change starts from within. I've personally experienced students who were at the bottom of the barrel and cared for nothing, and are now looking at colleges and planning on their careers. SO it can happen.
Who cares, the teachers, administrators and all the other personnel get their checks and benefits-so who cares. The school board members get their checks, benefits and perks-so who cares.
Unfortunately, there's more truth to this than what it should be. Sometimes that's how the outside looks at it.
I was lambasted in the paper a year ago because I said that our young people were suffering from education abortion. You're reaching here. I know many kids who were born here and are thriving in their personal lives. Difference? Parents cared, and they made an effort to better themselves whether the school wanted to help or not. Public school is not the problem. Private schools is not the solution. To be honest with you, the private schools in JC are not that better than the public schools. Only glaring difference is the race in each. Each person has the chance to be what they can be. I know a lady who was born and bred in JC and is now a student at Minnesota University pursuing her major. Plenty of other stories like that, we just have to look. SO this mindset of yours is also part of the problem.

Prove the glaring difference between both schools. Again, I can send the best students to private schools and leave the rest in the public schools to prove a point. Thing is, the problem is not public vs. private. Unfortunately, many see it that way, and are more determined to prove their private school argument than doing something to help the kids in Jasper, whether tehy go to Hardeeville or Thomas Heyward, excel and be the future for this county.
