Mr. JazzyBro's Weekly HS Football Picks: Week 5
Well, once again we have reached another Friday, which on top of many other thigs, means it's time for some Jaguar football. And boy what a season it's been so far. Ridgeland is currently at 3-1, and are coming off an upset win on the road against yet another 3A school. Tonight, they will conclude their non-region schedule and look to sweep their season series against Beaufort County schools when they host the Seahawks of Hilton Head Island. But before we get to the breakdown.......
I just want to congratulate Coach Kirkland and his staff, along with the players, on a great win last week. Many people (including myself) did not think that Ridgeland would evens tay close, much less win this game. But what a game. Ridgeland kept punching Creek in the mouth, and Creek had no answer or stop for the running game. Defensively, Ridgeland played a good game, and contained a spread offense that can be explosive. Kudos, but it's one win, one game. Now to the preview.
Hilton Head High School (1-3) vs. Ridgeland High School (3-1)
Previous Meeting: Seahawks cruised 27-7
Preview:
What a difference a year makes. Last season, the 'hawks cruised to a victory, and were riding high on to a region championship. This season, Hilton Head is rebuilding, as they lost many player from last year's region winning squad. But that doesn't mean the 'hawks are not good. With a stimey defense, which is coming off a great performance against the Red Devils (limited them to uner 200 total yards), and an offense that seems to have found its identity (57 points), Hilton head is coming in with confidence and somewhat of an identity. So is Ridgeland. Last week, Ridgeland upset the Dolphins of Battery Creek, a game where they pounded Creek's D for over 300 yards rushing, and contained the explosive offense of Battery Creek. Oh, and that game was on the road.
Defensively, Ridgeland has been steady this season, but has allowed big plays too many times. On Creek's first score, there was no Ridgeland defender within 5 yards of the reciever as he walked into the endzone. HHI likes to pass, and will look for those mistakes to capitalize. But unlike years' past, the Defense composed it self and was able to contain Creek's offense the rest of the night. They will ahve to do that once again tonight against a tough Seahawks offense that is coming from a 57 point output against Wade Hampton, and will look to continue to bomb it out. If Ridgeland can keep pressure on the inexperienced QB, look for the defense to have yet another productive evening.
Offensively, Ridgeland seems to have found consistency, adn they seem to be getting better, slowly, in limiting the penalties and turnovers. While most thought the running game would decline this year, it has actually gotten better, and that's thanks to a strong offensive line. They have been consistent this season, and will need to pund Hilton Head's defense to keep the 'hawks offense off the field for as long as possible.
If Ridgeland plays like it did last week, then expect this to be another close, good game. Regardless, look for the Jags to show improvement on all 3 aspects of the game.
