It doesn't surprise me that Jasper County could be in debt. We all knew it was coming when they decided to build the new schools. I remember very well sitting in the meetings and listening to all of the chatter and complaining about "why" they needed the new buildings to teach out of. The "how" could the people of jasper county expect anyone to remain in the ill conditions of the schools. Not only did I sit in the meetings where the school board only allowed people like "gregory" to speak about watermelons being eaten on the front porch of the white people while the blacks get the seeds, which to me made no sense at all as to why the new schools needed to be built, but I watched as I sat at the voting precints as well!!! All I saw was the obvious, these schools were never maintained properly. And the people who were pushing to put us in debt didn't understand what they were going to cause by they're ignorance. The buildings in the city I went to school are still educating children today. They educated the children of my mothers era, my era and these buildings stand educating out of to date. These are schools in the inner city. The key, maintaining. It costs less to maintain than it does to rebuild. That is, if the repairs are made properly without cutting corners and putting money that was asked to get from the taxpayers to do such repairs, but instead the folks in charge were putting a cut in they're pockets, the school board. Also, I listened as some of the teachers (who weren't even certified to teach) were up on they're soap boxes saying how much they cared about the well being of the kids and they're education, but they were also not educating because they said they couldn't due to the conditions. Well, people in third world countries educated on dirt floors. So how contradicting to they're point. Either you can or you can't educate!!!! Our leaders in this county have put us in debt and the people in some jobs in the county are getting our money and are still not educating. We are well below to the standards. And if you walk into one of our government buildings to pay your taxes, don't be surprised if you have to wait till the person who should be doing they're job ends a personal phone conversation, finger waving in the air to let you know YOU have to wait till they're finished first, before taking care of you, who are paying they're salary. So, it doesn't surprise me. The school board and the council is always going to be interested in digging in the taxpayers pockets. Until they are all out of jobs and we are all out of money, this is how things will continue.
